When it comes to work-life balance, mainland Europe has the right idea. Apparently siesta isn't just a Spanish thing, because between 1 and 5pm everyday the city of Cagliari shuts down. You'd probably be able to find some form of restaurant for a late lunch, but you would be hard-pressed to find a single shop open. For four days in a row we wandered through the Villanova district, passing the most intriguing looking shop called LoveRetro. Each time it was closed for the afternoon, and so I was limited to peering in through the window and imagine the vintage treasures that were waiting inside. Finally, on the penultimate day of our holiday (which was also payday, a wonderful coincidence) the door was finally open - I was positively giddy when I walked in and saw what was awaiting me...
Whilst Elliot kept the shop owner's adorable dogs company, I had my fill of browsing the store. There couldn't have been more than 50 items of clothing hanging on the artfully curated rails, a sign that each piece has been handpicked for its style and quality. Leaning ladders and the most beautiful green and pink dresser I have ever seen were draped with an impressive assortment of vintage designer bags, jewellery and accessories, from Gucci to Chanel to Burberry, all decorating the small space. I spotted a black suede skirt as soon as I walked in, and low-and-behold I was immediately presented with two of its suede sisters by the friendly shop owner: one in tan, and the very one I am wearing below in a beautiful ochre. You can only imagine how little persuading I needed to part with my money and purchase this gem.
Suede skirts have been on the fashion agenda for the last few years, and I couldn't help think of the coveted tan midi number from M&S that was all the rage last year after Alexa Chung was spotted wearing it. And now, one year on I have found my own interpretation of the trend, and I cannot wait to bring it into the colder months. It's suede, it's midi, it's an incredibly versatile yet unusual shade of brown, and I am already picturing it paired with roll-neck jumpers and OTK black suede boots.
I have a lot of fond memories of my week in Cagliari, but - and I hope my boyfriend doesn't mind me saying this - finding this skirt was definitely one of them. If you're ever in Cagliari, get yourself to LoveRetro and make sure you have a decent amount of cash in your purse!
